Degree Requirements

Students are required to learn and understand the policies and requirements of their degree.

BASIC SKILLS REQUIREMENTS

Policies

  • A minimum of 120 hours is required to earn a degree.
  • Students may need to complete general electives to reach 120 credit hours.
  • At least 30 hours numbered 3000 level or higher are required for graduation.
  • The final 30 of 36 hours taken for a degree must be completed as MU courses UNLESS the hours are earned through a study abroad program.
  • Students must meet the following GPA requirements to graduate:
    • 2.0 cumulative GPA
    • 2.0 major GPA
    • 2.0 GPA in the final 30 hours
    • 2.0 GPA in the final 60 hours

English 1000

  • Complete with a grade of C- or higher. 
  • This course is a prerequisite for Writing Intensive (WI) courses.
  • Complete by 60 hours to be eligible to file a graduation plan.

Writing Intensive (WI) courses

  • Complete one WI course numbered 1000 + and one WI course 3000+. 
  • The WI courses offered each semester are listed at the Campus Writing Program website.
  • WI courses can double-dip, that is, count for more than one requirement.

Diversity (DI) course (for first time college students beginning Fall 2017 or later)

  • Complete one DI course.
  • The DI courses offered each semester are found in myZou and are searchable under the course attribute “A&S Diversity Requirement.”
  • DI courses can double-dip, that is, count for more than one requirement.

College Algebra or Equivalent

  • Complete Math 1100 or equivalent with a grade of C- or higher. 
  • This course is a prerequisite for Math Reasoning Proficiency (MRP) courses.
  • Fulfill this requirement by 60 hours to be eligible to file a graduation plan.
  • Placement information can be found on the Math Placement website.

Math Reasoning Proficiency (MRP)

  • Complete a statistics course designated as MRP with a C- grade or higher. 
  • MRP courses are listed at the MU General Education website.
  • Recommended course options are Statistics 1200, 1300, or 1400.

Missouri State Law Requirement

  • Complete an approved MO State Law course in American Government or American History. 
  • Approved course options are listed on the MU General Education website.

Capstone

  • Complete Service Learning, Readings, or Internship course numbered 4000 level in the Focus Area. 
  • Complete in the final 45 hours at MU.
  • Earn a grade of C- or higher in the Capstone.
  • Find a full description of the options in the Service Learning, Internships, & Directed Readings section.
  • The Capstone must be an MU course.

COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCE FOUNDATION REQUIREMENTS

Foreign Language

  • Complete the elementary levels of a single foreign language. 
  • Language courses must be completed in order.        

Policies

  • Courses fulfilling A&S Foundation requirements must be included in the MU General Education course list.   
  • One course from a department outside of A&S may be used to fulfill requirements in each of the four Areas.
  • Courses fulfilling foundation requirements may NOT also fulfill major requirements.

Biological, Physical, and Mathematical Sciences

  • Complete a general education approved Biological Sciences course. Biological Sciences 1010, 1060, 1200, or 1500 are recommended course options.
  • Complete a general education approved Geology course. Geology 1100 or 1200 are the recommended course options.
  • Complete a general education approved Chemistry course. Chemistry 1100, 1320, and 1330 are recommended course options.
  • Complete 9 hours minimum in this area. 
  • One lecture with a corresponding laboratory must be completed.
  • Laboratories should be taken with the corresponding lecture or after the lecture course is completed, but not before completing the corresponding lecture course.

Behavioral Sciences

  • Complete 5 hours minimum of general education approved Behavioral Sciences courses.

Social Sciences

  • Complete a general education approved Economics or Agricultural Economics course. Economics 1014, Economics 1015, Agricultural Economics 1041, or Agricultural Economics 1042 are recommended.
  • Three hours are fulfilled by the MO State Law course.
  • The remaining 3 hours must be selected from the MU General Education Social Sciences category.

Humanistic Studies and Fine Arts

  • Complete 12 hours from three different departments.

9 Hours Numbered 2000+

  • Complete 9 hours of coursework numbered 2000 or higher from the following four areas: Behavioral, Biological, Physical, Mathematical, Social, and Humanities and Fine Arts. 
  • One of these courses may be outside of A&S.
  • At least 3 hours of this requirement must be fulfilled with an MU course.

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS

Policies

  • A total of 39 hours is required for the major. 
  • Students must complete 30 hours numbered 2000 or higher in the major.
  • 15 hours numbered 3000 level or higher are required in the major.
  • A minimum of 18 hours of A&S coursework must be completed in the major.
  • D-range grades are not allowed in the major.

Natural Dimensions

  • Complete 15 hours of coursework in this section.
  • The course levels will be determined by the academic advisor.
  • Refer to the list of Natural Dimensions courses to find options.

Social Dimensions

  • Complete 15 hours of coursework in this section.
  • The course levels will be determined by the academic advisor.
  • Refer to the list of Social Dimensions courses to find options.

Practicum Core

  • Complete Agricultural Economics 2070 or Natural Resources 2160.
  • Complete 3 hours of Service Learning, Internships, or Readings.
  • Complete an additional 3 hours of Service Learning, Internships, or Readings.
  • Service Learning, Internship, or Readings can be taken as a single course for 6 hours.
